Guest Post: 10 Effective Ways to Reduce Stress in the Modern World

By Elizabeth Shields

Had it up to here?  Got a lot on your plate, or feel at the end of your tether?  However, you choose to dress it up, express it, describe it, stress is a fact of modern life.  Fast-paced, permanently connected, 21st Century living can leave us frazzled and wrought.  The World Health Organization has called stress the “Health Epidemic of the 21st Century”.   Yet, it is not inevitable that we must accept stress as a permanent condition. There’s plenty of simple steps that turn the heat down on stress.  In this blog, we’ll journey through 10 effective ways to reduce and combat stress.  So, sit back, relax and read.

#1 Get Realistic about Resources

Stress is that feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure.  The mental assessment where we know our resources do not match the requirements of the to-do list.  A simple way to redress the lack of balance is to review that list, with our resources in mind.  Any more than 10 items on a to-do list for a given day is likely to feel overwhelming.  Accept the reality that you may need to say no if your resources don’t allow for it.   Practice the word “no”, remembering it is a complete sentence!

#2 Delegate

That to do list?  What can you delegate to help share the load a little?  Whether it’s finding ways to upskill a junior employee by delegating a creative or interesting project, hiring some home at help, or getting the kids involved in household tasks, delegating can be a great stress buster.  Try to avoid the guilt-trip mindset that says you are simply passing your stressful tasks onto someone else.  In the case of children, delegation of some tasks teaches responsibility and models healthy work-life balance for your kids.  Junior employees can learn a great deal and gain experience and hiring in some home help supports the local economy.

#3 Remember the Rule of “Good Enough”

Some stress is caused by a sense we aren’t measuring up to expectations.  Remember how it felt to have a teacher write on our report we “must try harder”.  Stressful.  Yet, sometimes we place unrealistic expectations upon ourselves, in other words we fall foul to perfectionism.  When it comes to your own expectations, “good enough” is a stress-busting maxim. Aim for a good-enough job most of the time, and you’ll soon feel the weight of stress slipping away.

#4 Whose Judgement Counts?

Connected with the idea of self-expectation is the idea of others’ views on our performance and worth.  You’ll never please everyone in life.  No matter how hard you try, or how successful you are, there’s always a critic on the side-lines offering judgmental comments.  Decide now, once and for all, whose judgment matters to you.  It makes it a lot easier to trust your own decisions, actions and feel content with your choices.

New Release: I Feel At Ease Knowing… A Guided Journal

Here is the sixth book in the Journaling to Feel Good Series. This journal topic felt like a natural progression to the series. Yes, it’s similar to the first book I Feel Peaceful Because…, but I think this sixth addition takes peacefulness a step further.

When we invite ease into our life, that brings us to a whole new level of peace, because we feel more relaxed and everything has the potential to feel effortless, instead of difficult or a struggle. I think that’s how life is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be easy. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be exciting and full of all the things we are passionate about.

Life gets hard when we think it has to be hard, but what if we flipped that script and believed in a life full of ease? Because doesn’t it feel good when we can feel true ease about something? And imagine having that feeling about everything, our whole life?

This journal can help make ease a more regular practice.

Here is the official book blurb…

Our emotions hold the key to a happy life. The better we feel, the better our life becomes around us. In life, we have learned many ways of not feeling well, but through consistently reaching for better feelings, we can rise above to something greater.

This guided journal is dedicated to finding the feeling of ease and other closely related emotions, which is a wonderful first step to cultivating a lasting life that is relaxed and deeply satisfied.

Journaling Prompts include the following… I feel at ease knowing, I feel relaxed when I, I feel satisfied because, I feel at peace doing, I feel relief having, I feel enjoyment because, I feel comfort thinking about.

Journal size is 6″ x 9″ with a glossy cover and cream colored pages inside.

Now available in Paperback and as a printable.

If you decide to give this journal try, please consider leaving a review on Amazon or Etsy. Thank you in advance!

New Release: I Feel Peaceful Because… A Guided Journal

I am excited to present another project I have been working on the last few months. Here is I Feel Peaceful Because…, a guided journal created specifically to help those who are interested in reaching for good feelings on a regular basis.

I have been on an intense spiritual journey for a deeper discovery of self the past several years, and one of the themes that has continuously popped up for me is the need to feel good. I believe that when we focus on thoughts, emotions, and situations that feel good, we invite more good feeling thoughts, emotions, and situations.

If we do this consistently, we can significantly change our lives for the better over a relatively short period of time. How long that takes really depends on how often negative thoughts and emotions are exchanged for positive (good feeling) thoughts and emotions.

This journal is a really great step to start doing that. It rotates through fourteen different positive emotions for about a three month period. It begins with a short prompt like I feel peaceful because…, and then it’s up to the user of the journal to fill in the rest.

In this journey of discovering what good feelings already exist and why, many more will be revealed, allowing for a deeper, richer, and more positive life all around.

But don’t take my word for it, if you are looking for something to help give you a positive boost, then try this journal and see how it can work for you.

If you do decide to try it out, please consider leaving a review on Amazon to let me and others know how it worked for you. This is the first book in a series of books I am looking to create, so helpful feedback is welcomed. Thank you in advance!

Yoga For Writers Videos

I’ve been a little quiet on my blog for awhile, because I’ve been busy with some personal projects. One of them has been actively working on completing a 200 hour training certificate to become a yoga instructor. This past week I completed all the tasks required for the certificate, including my final project, which was to teach a yoga class.

When the stay a home order came along for the recent outbreak, I thought for sure I would have to wait a long time to teach said class. However, I was fortunate enough to run across a virtual writing retreat who was looking for someone to teach a yoga class. I jumped all over that opportunity!

My next task was to plan the class. So I decided to create a yoga routine geared specifically to writers, who can spend long hours sitting. So the poses I planned for are for stretching the back, opening the hips, and strengthening the wrists, arms, and shoulders.

After the retreat, I realized that other writers might like to try this routine too. And so, I decided to post my very first yoga teaching experience on my blog for those who are into, or want to get into yoga. Or for those who just need something to do during this stay at home period.

The Best Way to Have a Good Feeling Life

Over the past few years, I have been making it a priority to have a good feeling life. My long dedication has paid off in wonderful ways, because most of my days now are pleasant, peaceful, and just plain good. The absolute best way I have found to maintain a good feeling life is through appreciation.

Being thankful and/or grateful is similar to this. In fact, the very first positive change I made in my incredibly bad feeling life was to write down three things I was thankful for every day. Eventually, I realized my thankfulness had turned to gratitude, and now I simply call it appreciation.

The word appreciation might have a small distinction between thankfulness and gratitude, but it’s an important one, because appreciation has a far bigger good feeling attached to it (just try it and see for yourself). When I appreciate, there’s not even a tiny amount of bad feeling or obligation attached to what I’m feeling. It just feels good.

Another thing I have found is that consistency is vital to building a good feeling life. I can instantly lift any bad feelings by spending fifteen solid minutes really appreciating something or someone in my life. After that fifteen minutes, I can feel my mood lift, and as a result, the rest of my day becomes so much better. But then what about the next day? Or what if something or someone comes along and completely ruins that good feeling high? Yep, I find more things to appreciate.

The more I appreciate, the better my life gets.
